And finally, there are a lot more developed characters this time around–and characters that I actually liked I don’t think I cared for ANY of the characters in The Valley of Horses.
After that first book? I’m too far in to turn back now.

Ayla, the prehistoric heroine of Auel’s immensely popular series, meets a new clan, the mammoth hunters, in this eagerly awaited third installment to the saga. I hear often that authors should show, not tell, and after uhnters this book, glazing over and page turning past large sections of telling often repeating what has been told before I fully appreciate that advice.
The earth’s children series, is an exceptional read on the early days of man, great cast of characters including the animals and plants, great hunts, and interactions between the different clans. Jondalar, a Zelandoni, is a foreigner among the Mamutoi, and Ayla’s acceptance in their society makes him feel separated from her. The wonder in Talut”s eyes was shared by the rest of the band, particularly a young girl of twelve years. I ‘accepted’ the awful normalization of rape in the first book because it fit in the way the society worked, but in this book, the Mamutois are supposed to be the ‘nice’ characters that are totally in for a woman’s freedom regarding her body Mamut himself tells Ayla that, when she view spoiler [explains Okay, so I generally don’t jeqn reviews, because it takes me a lot of time that could be spent reading another book, but this time I NEED to address something that everyone forgets to address.

And this “misunderstanding” rambles on for over pages. But- like pizza- even a lackluster book by Jean M. Talut appraised mamoth shrewdly. Aug 09, Kelly Dubs rated it liked it.
It’s that they’re badly written. I’ll quote some of his thoughts and interactions right out of the book, so you can see I have the book in Spanish, though, so these ones are translated: If THAT is how you are going to end this plot Just as Talut was getting over the shock, the young woman gave him another.
So with that said, and the story finally moving forward in its proper direction, I will proceed on to the next and even longer book in the series. And that takes up a lot of the book. She finds women friends and painful memories of the Clan aueel left behind, and meets Ranec, the dark-skinned, magnetic master carver of ivory, whom she cannot refuse—inciting Jondalar to a fierce jealousy hunnters he tries to control by avoiding her.
And what about Jondalar teaching her all about Cro-Magnon relationships in the previous book? Mamut is also one of the first to become aware of Ayla’s unique upbringing. Nevertheless, I persisted, convinced that “The Valley of Horses” had just been a brief dip before the series got back to the good standard of the first book.
