In Xanadu – Wikipedia

Sep 07, Abdost rated it it was amazing. Laura, his travel companion in the first half of the journey is painted as a tough, domineering and indestructible woman while Louisa, who accompanies him in the second half, is the polar opposite of being “beautiful, delicate and fragrant” his words not mine.

What brings him straight in to the premier league of travel writers was the ability to match the current day, with immensely readable history of the country and location. Very nice idea in the first place following in the footsteps of the legendary Marco Polo.

Sep 18, Pages Buy. His portrayal of Laura and Louisa reads like caricature, which is true of his representation of practically everyone he meets on the way as well. Dalrymple’s previous summer holiday jaunt, walking from Edinburgh to Jerusalem following the route of the First Crusade, prepares him well for the daunting 12, mile journey, which due to current geopolitical situations, requires him to travel from Israel via Cyprus before picking up Polo’s route again in Syria and then on through Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and thence onto China.

In Xanadu: A Quest

Books by William Dalrymple. How did they resupply? And almost nothing is said of the scenic Karakoram Highway.

Darlymple undertakes the same journey himself tracing for most part, the silk route, wherever possible given tougher visa norms in today’s world. In Xanadu poses as an irreverent travel book –complete with funny anecdotes about muscular hotel managers, ma William Dalrymple retraces and chronicles Marco Polo’s 13th Century travels from Jerusalem to the fabled Xanadu in China actually Shangdu, Kublai Khan’s summer capital along with two fellow students in In Xanadu. The beautiful, exotic locations that Dalrymple travels to are painted with such lucidity, that when one looks up from the page one may be surprised not to find themselves alongside him on the foothills of the Himalayas, or in a bustling town in India He has such astonishing skill it is slightly disorientating.

This was the only reason why I picked up ‘In Xanadu: Anyways Dalrymple made his journey in ‘s which should have been easier for him rather than Marco Polo but again Marco had the golden tablet provided to him by Kubla Khan.

I wonder, sometimes, if someone were to write a travel book about the West in an equally xanaddu and patronising manner, would it get published? Overall a not so spectacular read unless of course you are planning to undertake a similar journey or, as was in my case, to complete the set of Dalrymple’s travel anecdotes. He does not even spare his female travel companions.
