Bliss’s characterizations rung true to her naive fourteen-year-old, daughter-of-hippies image. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up. But Bliss is able to see through much of this superficiality, partly because of her unconventional upbringing her hippie parents raised her on a communeand partly because she is generally a caring, down-to-earth person.

Bliss believes in civil rights and is horrified by the wrong-headedness of her peers, but she makes friends with them anyway, because Bliss desperately wants friends her own age; she’s never had any, because she used to live on a commune, where there weren’t any teenagers.
My favorite part of this book was how Myracle slowly builds the tension. It also had way too much happening in the plot.

But Bliss was really fresh and great and I loved her outlook on life. In addition, all the quotations that separated each chapter became annoying. I also think she developed her characters really well. Families can talk about how Sandy emotionally manipulates Bliss and ways Bliss could have been more forceful in standing up for herself. I have no clue, and Myraclee really don’t want to spend my time worrying about it. The author incorporates so many themes — hippies, racism, class, history, school cliques, the Manson trial, and the occult — that the result is ominous and yet full of plot holes.
Or it did, until the last quarter of the book, which went downhill. As if this dysfunctional relationship weren’t stressful enough, Bliss also seems to be in psychic communication with a girl who took her own life many years ago at Crestview. But the thing is, I wondered how they even progressed to the whole dating scene. I just think she should have spent more time developing the plot which was lquren sometimes and just could have been done better.
