The underlying reasons seem to have been great sex but The sex part was also just brushed over as if The author was affraid to be more explicit. Personally I like the intricacies of the species and the visuals she creates around them, but what makes me hit my head against the wall is the closeness of the legal system s and those who up uphold the law; also some of Maurra’s powers feel a bit over the top and the only limit on some of them is how her old duties regulated them, otherwise she is powerful enough to take on battalions or anyone to the point she requires a “lose button” to be captured in the first place.
